The Secret of Monkey Island was the first game in the Monkey Island series, and the fifth game to use the SCUMM scripting language. At first, the game follows Guybrush's attempts to prove himself a pirate; later, he attempts to rescue his new-found love, Elaine Marley, from the clutches of the ghost pirate LeChuck.

Versions

The Secret of Monkey Island was released in several different versions.

  • The SCUMM V4 version (EGA DOS floppy)
  • The SCUMM V5 versions (VGA DOS floppy, Amiga, Atari ST, FM-TOWNS, Macintosh, Sega/Mega CD, VGA DOS CD)
  • The Special Edition version (based on the VGA DOS CD version with high-resolution assets laid over the original V5 script data).

The high-resolution data ("modern" mode) in the Special Edition is not supported by ScummVM. It is possible to extract the files of the V5 VGA DOS CD version ("classic" mode) and make them playable via ScummVM. The process is described in this thread. Do note that by using this method, only the classic mode is playable in ScummVM.
