Humongous Entertainment is a video game company founded by Ron Gilbert and Shelley Day in 1992.
The company built its reputation by making excellent graphic adventures for children beginning in the early 1990s. They soon expanded into the popular children's sport franchise Backyard Sports.
Other than the Backyard Sports series, their other famous game franchises include Putt-Putt, Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, Let's Explore with Buzzy, Big Thinkers, Fatty Bear and SPY Fox.
Ron Gilbert brought the SCUMM scripting language with him when he left LucasArts to form Humongous Entertainment, and as such, most of the PC and Macintosh versions of Humongous Entertainment's games use an enhanced version of the SCUMM scripting language.
The company was purchased by GT Interactive in 1996, which was in turn sold to Infogrames, whose US branch became Atari in 2003. In 2005, Atari sold Humongous Entertainment back to the main Infogrames branch in France. Infogrames renamed Humongous Entertainment to Humongous in 2006. Atari filed for bankruptcy in January 2013, and Tommo purchased Humongous at the bankruptcy auction in July 2013. Tommo renamed the company back to Humongous Entertainment.
The rights to some franchises are no longer owned by Humongous Entertainment, as they were purchased by other companies at the Atari bankruptcy auction in July 2013. The rights to the Backyard Sports franchise were purchased by The Evergreen Group, and the rights to Moonbase Commander were purchased by Rebellion.
